Functional Medicine vs. Mainstream Medicine - What’s the Difference?

Have you heard of Functional Medicine, or are you curious to learn more? In this video, Dr. Jim Chialtas explains his top 3 differences between Functional Medicine and Western or mainstream medicine in the United States.

Difference 1 - Looking for the Root

Functional Medicine looks for the root cause of a patient's symptoms, versus treating symptoms. Mainstream medicine is essential for many healthcare needs, but for chronic and hard-to-treat conditions such as thryoid imbalance and autoimmune disorders, Functional Medicine digs deeper into a patient's blood chemistry to find the root cause.

Difference 2 - Average vs. Optimal Health Ranges

Times have changed, and the average American's health is much poorer than it was decades ago. However, when a patient reviews their lab tests, they're being compared to the average American. Functional Medicine has "reference ranges" for ideal wellness instead. This different approach shows where a patient's health imbalances lie in relation to optimal health. The goal is to help the patient get back into the healthy range, not just into an average range.

Difference 3 - Spending More Time

Mainstream medical doctors have less and less time to help their patients. This can be very frustrating, especially when chronic cases may require a lengthy intake and understanding of a patient's history. In Dr. Jim's practice, he dedicates much more time to digging deep and evaluating all of the current and historical factors. His patients enjoy a much more relaxed experience and develop a great working relationship.
